How to recognize genuine Moldavite? In an era of fakes, origin is more important than ever before

Moldavite is one of the Czech Republic's rarest natural treasures. However, its uniqueness, limited quantity, and growing interest from collectors and jewelry lovers worldwide present a problem – an increasing number of fakes.

While in the past ordinary green glass was used as a substitute for Moldavite in jewelry, today fakes are much more sophisticated. Stones that at first glance resemble natural Moldavites commonly appear online, but in reality, they have nothing in common with this unique Czech phenomenon.

The reason is simple.

There is a limited quantity of genuine Moldavites. Their deposits are rare, new finds are becoming less frequent, and global demand has been growing for a long time. Where the value of the original grows, there is room for fakes.

Most fake Moldavites are made from ordinary green glass. Using molds, grinding, and chemical treatments, manufacturers try to imitate the appearance of natural stone. The result can be pieces that look convincing in a photograph, but an experienced eye quickly reveals their true origin.

Nature does not create copies.

Every genuine Moldavite is an original. It has its own shape, characteristic sculptation, different structure, and a unique story. Just as there are no two identical fingerprints, there are no two identical natural Moldavites.

That is precisely why one of the most common warning signs is the repeating appearance of stones offered by various sellers. If dozens of photographs show almost identical "natural" Moldavites, it is very likely that they were created according to one manufacturing mold, and not by the action of nature over millions of years.

In the world of the internet and anonymous marketplaces, it is often impossible to trace the origin of the offered stone. The customer does not know where it comes from, who found it, or what its history is.
